At 20, most people are fumbling through life with avocadoes on toast clutched in one hand and a coffee in the other. It’s a different story for Nicolette Stathopoulos from this year’s batch of Masterchef contestants, who put her desserts on the table for her recent dessert degustation pop-ups held at Lona Restaurant in the heart of St Kilda. Four courses of dessert is not usually my cup of tea, but Nicolette’s talent and success on the show, as well as her lovable personality, meant I had to try some of her dishes out.

The set-up was simple and sophisticated; everyone had a menu placemat and a showbag with some goodies including a cookie that said ‘Nicolette’. Too cute not to eat, but wisely I decided to hold back to save room for the sweet onslaught of dessert to come.

Grandpa’s Lemon & Raspberry

This was Nicolette’s Masterchef audition dish, so ultimately it’s the reason any of this happened. And I can definitely see why. The raspberry sorbet was the highlight for me, as its coldness helped to balance out the acidity of the flavours. It was smooth and I couldn’t get enough. We were also allowed to self-decorate our plate with a pipette of raspberry coulis!

Carrot and Mandarin

A very clever dish. It tasted like a deconstructed carrot cake of sorts, complete with the creamy icing. The crunchy carrot peel gave an interesting savoury texture.

Tropical Delight

I personally didn’t enjoy the flavours on this dish. The coconut felt understated and a bit sickly while the pickled pineapple took away its freshness.

Berry Cocoa Track

This was absolutely stunning, so delicate and just delicious. Everything you want in a chocolate dessert to finish the night, it was rich, generous and decorated with gold leaf.

I can’t wait to see what Nicolette does next.

Love, Ingrid
