When I was applying for my work experience placement, filling in all those sheets and doing the Work Safe tests induced many a groan accompanied by “I’ll do it later”. It felt like the actual week would never arrive, and now that it’s all over, I can see that the whole process was entirely worth it, because I got to spend a week in Sydney (away from Melbourne with its -1 degree nights) at Carla Zampatti and learn about how a fashion label really works, as well as meet so many incredible people.
On Friday, the day seemed a whole lot more busy for me than any other day of the week. I got to help out in so many different departments and as soon as I finished one task I was onto another. I loved every minute of the day and was dreading the moment when I would have to walk out of those doors for the last time. As a celebration and a thank you, I made some rocky road brownies, complete with mini-marshmallows and caramel for the entire stuff, which won me many a smile and more names learnt. Being able to talk to each person as I handed the brownies out allowed me to talk to each staff member more and have moments of reflection of my week.
At the end of the day, I probably said goodbye to everyone five times each because I didn’t want to leave. I had to return twice because I left my umbrella behind, then my pencil case. The perfect level of stress to end a week full of running around, laughing and the best fun combined with so much learning and inspiration. This week has made me appreciate the power of the fashion industry even more. I’ve realised just how much I want to continue to somehow contribute to this industry and pursue a life within it. So two days late, I finish off my week in Sydney. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading about my adventure and my constant talk of weather. Until next time, Sydney. Back to six layers of socks and thermals. Joy.
Love, Ingrid
