Although I am a religious ‘I hate winter’ fanatic, I must admit that the weather in Sydney today was gorgeous. Crisp and sunny all day. So weather was definitely not a problem for me when walking around the city today delivering parcels to and from David Jones. Now harbouring sore feet and droopy eyelids, I am very happy with my second day at Carla Zampatti as a work experience student, and left wanting more.Tuesdays are despatch days. That means frantic running around in the basement level of the office, last-minute barcoding and packaging to hit the 4:30 deadline for pickup. Although the work can be tedious and slightly repetitive, I loved the feeling of actually contributing to the company and to the people surrounding me. Wrapping plastic bags around garments can be made fun if you’re surrounded by the right people.
All the staff at Carla Zampatti are absolutely wonderful - not at all condescending, they are all amazing to learn from and work with. I think they definitely prove the vicious image presented of the fashion industry in 'The Devil Wears Prada’. So as I ran around with large plastic bags and cable ties flying everywhere, I was also having the time of my life. Another thing I have discovered is that work wear is not as hard as I originally thought. The stereotypical suit and skirt set is entirely unnecessary; anything in your wardrobe can be dressed up or down. This shirt from Country Road could be worn in summer on the beach, but today I chose to pair it with some slick boots and a sleeveless coat to fit into Sydney’s chic streetstyle. On another note, I love how close by everything is in Sydney. Lunch was a quick walk to Westfield foodcourt. Every street corner emanates urbanity and style and you can tell the locals apart from the tourists by when they start walking across the road - 10 seconds before the green man, or on the green man. I hope that by the end of the week, I will manage to fall in the first category.
With high hopes for tomorrow, I am hoping to be able to visit more different departments for the rest of the week.
Love, Ingrid
