funky fresh
adjective phrase
Superb; the very greatest; way rad: Funky fresh describes something that is super, exceptional, superior to fresh (late-1980s+)
I often look through mum’s old photo prints, all billion stacks of them. Apart from admiring her beauty (Hi mum!), I like to observe her clothes and the vivid sense of life and colour they emit. In the 80s and 90s, everything was over the top, colourful, and extremely fabulous, just like the Spice Girls. So that’s why bottom of the drawer vintage finds are the best sort of finds. Scrounged from my grandparents’ chest of drawers and worn by my mother in the fabulous 80s to discos and all sorts, the crisp cutting and truly retro look attracted my eyes immediately. I mean, plainly put, looking at and wearing this print just makes me feel on top of the world. It makes me feel funky fresh.
A lot of what we are currently seeing circulating high street fashion is minimalism. Lots of white, black, grey and beige, effortless layering and an aesthetic which can be manipulated to become pure, innocent, sophisticated or cutting edge. Today, I deviate from these autumn winter guidelines. I’ve reached that time in the middle of winter when jeans and a jumper is just too much for me to take. So I shake those heebie-jeebies off with a burst of summer, of dancing, of joy. I find it really important to change things up frequently; I actually can’t describe my personal style in less than a 1000 word essay, because I like so many different things. Don’t be afraid to diverge from your normal aesthetic. It might be the best thing you ever do.
This retro set paired with the classic denim shirt jacket and delightful platforms provides the opportunity to become a new me. I don’t mean that in a cheesy, ‘finding myself’ way. I just mean that it’s important to add a little spice to your life. Warm yourself out of the winter chill with colours, contrast and inspiration from the 80s and 90s, where almost-painful pattern clashes and colour blocking reign supreme. This style has gone around, come around, and now there’s nothing stopping us from re-creating the period with more finesse. Cue in a fun wall by Mary-Lou Pavlovic, some Baby Spice attitude, and you have everything you need.
Watch out; I might just burst into Wannabe and dance my way down Chapel St.
