Lygon Street’s inevitable sense of warmth gave me an excellent excuse to buy an ice cream in the middle of winter, and where better to go than Pidapipo, an authentic gelateria run by Lisa Valmorbida, graduate of Carpigiano gelato university. In Italian, ‘pidapipo’ is a version of the children’s game Simon Says. The colourful lights and vibrant interior complete with watermelons and pineapples is balanced out by the subtle marble island bench in the middle of the room, dotted with stainless steel 'pozzetti’ filled with the day’s fresh ice cream. Judging the ice cream by its aesthetic is not possible; one must resort to deciding from a list of mouth-watering seasonal options handwritten on a blackboard. Does the vibe of European authenticity and an endlessly sunny lifestyle get any better than this? My ice cream, a cup of Nutella Swirl and Banana Milk, was delightful. It was smooth as silk (for lack of any other more sophisticated description), not too creamy, and topped with Nutella sauce. Nothing can compare to traditional, homemade Italian ice cream as good as this, in the happy Pidapipo environment.

Oh, and they have a chocolate tap. How about a 10/10?
