I bought this coat (or non-coat, as the definition above would specify) in the heat of spring last year in preparation for this year’s winter. Ever since, I’ve been dying to wear it and today’s slightly chilly, but simultaneously sunny autumn weather gave me the perfect opportunity to pull it out of the deep, dark depths of my wardrobe for the first time.

The said non-coat has a bit of a trick up its sleeves. (I’m having a bit too much fun here). All of a sudden, it can turn into a dictionary definition coat, by zipping its sleeves on. That’s why I love this coat; it has the versatility to be suitable for a lukewarm autumn day as well as a freezing night in the middle of winter. It is everything that a coat should be; heavy, with beautiful wool and all the warmth you need, with the added benefit of effortless, timeless style. Its neutral grey and gorgeous texture allow it to be thrown on over any outfit on any given day. The long collar and straight cut give it some elegance and a feeling of power.

Today, I’ve styled my favourite coat with a lack of colour, but an abundance of edge. It is all about the clean lines and angles, the edgy zips on the shorts, the grey on grey on white on black, the stripes against the shade blocking. Easy to wear and even easier to look good in. Maybe winter’s not so bad after all.

Watch this space and you’re bound to see more versions of this coat pop up in future posts, sleeved or un-sleeved. I think that dictionary.com might just have to create a new definition for the word ‘coat’, as sleeveless coats seem to be all the rage in stores now. Lucky I got in early.
