grand slam

Tennis can be summed up with three simple concepts; a racquet, a ball and some lines. Perhaps an imaginary or tangible net might add to the description, but essentially, tennis is a ball game which can be played with a bare minimum of essential objects. The game originated in 1869 and has now spiralled into one of the world’s most popular and most watched sports. It is both a simple form of exercise and leisure, as a hobby, as well as a business and a career, for professionals. It entails so many things; fitness, inspiration, advertising, fashion, coaching, ball-kidding, sweat, blisters. The list is endless.
However, one of my favourite aspects of the professional sphere of tennis are the Grand Slams. Down under, the Australian Open is symbolic of endless summer nights spent yelling at the TV with salty beach hair, or even better, sweating it out at Rod Laver. The traffic is horrific, and the red peeling nose inevitable, but the sense of excitement and expectation in the air is without parallel. Days are spent lazing on the beach, and nights spent watching tennis until late.
Inspired by vintage women’s tennis skirts against bronzed summer skin, I have tried to encapsulate the radiance and the slightly glamorous vibe that comes hand in racquet (ha) with tennis. White on white is one of my all-time favourite pairings. Depending on the fabric of the garment, the seemingly plain colour becomes so versatile. Silk is sleek, sexy and Parisian chic, while the comfortable cotton and linen I’m sporting (ha ha) here is so laid back and comfortable for the eye. The high-waisted, slightly longer shorts lengthen the leg and provide a vintage feel, which is accentuated by the classic Nike visor cap and classic tennis shoes. With only two colours in an entire outfit, simplicity rules supreme.
On another note, I am still wondering how people would have actually worn these Nikes as tennis shoes. Even people without my funky flat feet would have struggled to run about in these (albeit beautiful) babies.
Love, Ingrid
